No estate has had greater impact on the reputation of wines from Spain than Miguel Torres.Torres is responsible for the groundbreaking research undertaken on Catalan grape varieties — research that revealed which varieties fare best in Spain’s microclimates. For centuries, indigenous grapes dominated the vineyards; now, “international varieties” such as Merlot are more widely planted. The owners of Torres believe wine should be enjoyed with family and friends, and the name of their Atrium label is intended to evoke the porch-fronted entrance to a typical Mediterranean home, designed like a Roman temple. And there is no more welcoming wine than Merlot, given its lush mouthfeel and easy-drinking style. The 2010 Atrium Merlot was crafted from grapes grown in Spain’s Penedes region, situated less than an hour from Barcelona. Thanks to Torres and other estates, Penedes now is recognized as a hub of quality winemaking, with the Atrium Merlot deliciously contributing to that reputation.
